Doha, Qatar, 29 June 2019 – Msheireb Properties, the national real estate developer and subsidiary of Qatar Foundation, announced earlier the launch of two books developed in partnership with international researchers, architects, and urban planners, who  partook in the restoration and building process of Msheireb Downtown Doha and Msheireb Museums.

The book launch took place in two special ceremonies, last week, in London, and were attended by HE the Ambassador of Qatar to UK, Mr Yousef Al Khater, VIPs, industry key players, international stakeholders, and international media.

The first book, ‘Msheireb Museums: Transforming Doha’s Heritage Houses’, showcases Msheireb Museums, which form a historical restoration of four traditional heritage houses in the heart of Msheireb Downtown Doha, the world’s first sustainable regeneration project located in Qatar’s capital, Doha. They are outstanding examples of enduring continuity and the meaning of history in a city which is, otherwise, a place of rapid change.

The second book, ‘Building on Tradition – The New Architectural Language of Qatar’, presents the ‘Seven Principles’ of architecture developed over three years by the best minds in the architectural world. A panel of architects involved in the design of the Msheireb Downtown Doha shared their insights on how they had established these design principles, which eventually translated into a unique modern Qatari architectural language, blending the best of aesthetics and functionality, as well as heritage and modernism.

From his side, HE Mr Youssef Al Khater, Ambassador of Qatar to the UK, said: “I am so proud of this amazing representation of Qatar on international levels. The process and achievements, documented eloquently by Msheireb Properties through these world-class books, demonstrate effectively Qatar’s commitment to sustainable development and to enriching the conversation on the issue, by sharing knowledge and setting an example for other urban development companies around the world.”

Commenting on this milestone, Acting CEO of Msheireb Properties, Ali Al Kuwari said, “We are proud to share this Qatari know-how and experience with the world. The Seven Principles can indeed be adopted anywhere for anyone who aims to create a community that is rooted in its past and geared for the future at the same time. It is the result of three years of research and collaboration, enabling us to accomplish the first ever sustainable downtown regeneration project in the world, as well as the smartest and most sustainable fully built city district.”

“Msheireb Properties aims to enrich people’s lives and enhance the way they live and thrive, and we do believe that in order to succeed in doing this, we have to share knowledge, exchange expertise, and promote the conversation about best practices.”

Dr Hafiz Ali, Msheireb Museums Director, said: “As part of Msheireb Properties, we are very happy and proud of these books. This is the wisdom we have accumulated along the years, compiled in a capsule, for those who would like to understand our journey towards restoring a crucial part of Qatar’s history, namely; its first and oldest city centre district.”

“The Museums’ book elaborates on the sophisticated work underlying the challenge of bringing back to life four houses, each of which has a story that is intertwined with that of the development of our country. The book coincides with our recent nomination for the Agha Khan Award for Architecture 2019, the most prestigious accolade in the industry, which could not be more perfect timing,” he added.

The Msheireb Properties books will be launched in Arabic soon in Qatar and the Arab World.

Msheireb Properties Launches Annual Walkathon In Celebration Of Qatar National Sports Day

Doha, 12 February 2019

Msheireb Properties , Qatar’s leading sustainable developer and a subsidiary of Qatar Foundation for Education, Sciences and Community Development, celebrated Qatar National Sports Day at Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD) with company employees and their families, as well as team members from the two soon-to-be launched hotel properties at MDD; Mandarin Oriental Doha and Al Wadi Hotel Doha MGallery by Accorhotels. The event began with a walkathon around the city district, starting in Sahat Wadi Msheireb and ending in Barahat Msheireb, the largest covered public square in the Middle East.

With no better way to showcase Msheireb Downtown Doha as a walkable city, MP used the occasion of the National Sports Day to launch what will become an annual walkathon tradition at Msheireb Downtown Doha, the new destination for leisure, living and business, and the walkable district in the heart of the city. In the spirit of the day, the morning was filled with fun sport activities for staff members and their families to encourage them to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Msheireb Downtown Doha, the smartest and most sustainable fully-built city district in the world, aims to reverse the pattern of development in Doha that tended towards isolated land use, reliance on car transportation and energy hungry structures. It is set to become a new social and civic hub in the city centre – a place where it is enjoyable to live, work, shop, visit, and spend time with family and friends.

MDD is the result of a three-year research conducted by Msheireb Properties in collaboration with international pioneers in design, architecture, and urban planning to regenerate the old centre of Doha in a way that promotes smart and sustainable living.

Tram Depot at MDD Receives Platinum LEED Certification

Msheireb Properties, Qatar’s leading sustainable developer and a subsidiary of Qatar Foundation for Education, Sciences and Community Development, has received another global accolade by obtainingPlatinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accreditation for the Tram Depot located within their flagship development project, Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD). This accolade coincides with Msheireb Properties receiving their third tram from the US-based manufacturer, TIG/m, LLC.

The Tram Depot, a stabling and maintenance facility for Msheireb Properties’ three trams, received Platinum LEED accreditation in recognition of its advanced specifications that meet the LEED criteria. According to a report produced by the judges, accreditation was awarded based on excellence across multiple criteria, including, design, fit out, sustainability, and optimized energy performance. The report also referred to the building’s overall approach to environmental friendliness, in terms of waste management and low-emitting materials.

Msheireb Downtown Doha has one of the highest concentrations of LEED-certified sustainable buildings, making it the world’s first sustainable downtown regeneration project. With a 32% energy reduction goal, almost all the project buildings have LEED Gold certification, with some buildings exceeding expectations to achieve LEED Platinum status.

The tramway network is one of the core features of MDD, planned to facilitate the transportation of residents and visitors around the city in an eco-friendly way. The third self-powered, high-tech, electric streetcar, designed and built by TIG/m, has now arrived on site and is being installed at the district. TIG/m designed, manufactured, and installed the public transportation system of MDD, with the goal of reducing automobile traffic and providing eco-friendly, convenient travel in Downtown Doha.

TIG/m President Brad Read said, “We aim to facilitate the reintroduction of the electric street railway into the fabric of modern cities and Msheireb Downtown Doha is an example of how to do just that without compromising functionality or aesthetics. We are very happy with our collaboration and immensely proud of what we have achieved. It is sincerely our wish at TIG/m that more urban developers follow the lead of Msheireb Properties and start introducing transportation substitutes that are cleaner, more affordable, fast, and efficient.”

Mr. Ali Al KuwariActingChief Executive Officer, Msheireb Properties said: “We are proud to receive yet another Platinum LEED accreditation for the Tram Depot. We know of no other development project in the world that has LEED certified the housing and maintenance of a cities’ transportation vehicles. With the arrival of final tram for Msheireb Downtown Doha, we have the ability to provide an easy transport network throughout the smart and sustainable city’s neighbourhoods and facilities. It will be the first of its kind in Qatar and another milestone on our journey to conclude the development of this award-winning development project.”

The three TIG/m trams are single-deck, rigid body, self-powered vehicles, and require no overhead wire or wayside power systems of any kind. The traction power is provided by onboard batteries operating with a regenerative braking function. Ancillary power is provided by a small onboard generator. Because the power for a full day of service is carried on-board, the trams are immune to technical problems caused by an off-board power support system, and free of the need to stop for charging during passenger service.

The MDD trams are fully air-conditioned and incorporate special light-filtering glass panels which inhibit over 90% of the heat from sunlight. The trams are also convertible and can be operated as open-air cars during the cooler winter months by removing the large glass panels. This feature is unique to the MDD tramway system.

In addition, the System incorporates many advanced features for the convenience of the passengers and overall safety of the tramway and assets. They include: level boarding at all passenger stations; a hop-on-hop-off service in the Wadi Msheireb section of Downtown; Virtual Tram Detection and tram priority at the traffic signals; tram arrival signs in real-time on the trams and at the passenger stations; on-board CCTV; and on-board Wi-Fi.

The tramway network within Msheireb Downtown Doha is a single 2 km, closed-loop track system that includes nine stops, with a 400-meter hop-on/hop-off zone. The trams will operate between the hours of 6am to 1am on Sunday to Thursday, and from 1pm to 1am on Friday and Saturday, every day of the year. The system links all parts of the development within 18 minutes, with a 6-minute headway at each station, and offers residents access to Msheireb Station, the largest Doha Metro station that links Qatar Rail’s three metro lines: Red, Green, and Golden.

The MDD trams run on standard gauge track (1,435 mm) and are custom designed and hand crafted to the highest standards of excellence, while adhering to European Standards for Tramway Safety.

Upon completion, the new Downtown District will offer residents a combination of luxurious and spacious townhouses that blend traditional Qatari heritage with modern architecture, as well as contemporary apartments with world-class fittings and finishes. MDD will also provide residents with the largest offering of parks & plazas within one development in Qatar — a testament to its commitment to providing not only green spaces, but also green practices throughout the city.
