New Brand Campaign of Msheireb Downtown Doha “Smart City with Soul” Revealed

Msheireb Properties, the leading sustainable real estate development company in Qatar, revealed the new brand campaign of its flagship city Msheireb Downtown Doha, reflecting the true essence of the smartest and most sustainable city district in the world.

The new tagline, “Smart City with Soul”, was unveiled in a special event held at Barahat Msheireb in Msheireb Downtown Doha and was attended by Msheireb Properties management and marketing team.

Aiming to reposition Msheireb Downtown Doha as a ‘Smart City with Soul’, the tagline reflects the main concept of the city of the future built with humanity and cultural identity at its core. It will also enhance Msheireb Downtown Doha as the place where humanity and cultural identity connect, giving soul to the space around it and ensuring a better quality of life to current and future generations.

Using smart technology, illustrations were projected on the buildings showing how Msheireb Downtown Doha connects the past with the future, with stories of older generations and Qatar cultural symbols that reflects the meaning of the campaign.

The campaign strengthens the city’s position as “Msheireb Downtown Doha is where technology, heritage and cultural identity meet”. It is built around three main hubs in the city: Al Kahraba Street, Barahat Msheireb andSikkat Wadi Msheireb.

Al Kahraba street at Msheireb was the first street to be powered by electricity and is now reviving this heritage by introducing the first smart and sustainable district to cope with new technology. Sikkat Wadi Msheireb is now the soul of the city, where main activities are taking place to gather the community once more. Whereas in the past, it was the place where people used to meet to water their livestock and spend time together.

Barahat Msheireb is the largest open-air covered square in the Middle East featuring the largest retractable roof in the region. It is the place to socialise, meet, relax and enjoy an open space.

Msheireb Properties Lights Up for Qatar National Day

Msheireb Properties, the leading sustainable real estate developer, celebrated Qatar National Day with decorations and celebrations to mark the holiday while ensuring a safe and festive visit to people.

Until December 20, Msheireb Downtown Doha’s streets will be draped in Qatari flags and lights. The entire façade of building of M7 shines brightly with the Qatar National Day logo. Kahraba Street and Sikkat Wadi Street will be displaying themed lighting, festive flags and pillars in white and maroon colors until January 3, 2021.

Geo-targeted to the areas in Msheireb Downtown Doha, consumers can download a specialised app which provides fun and eco-friendly Qatar National Day fireworks shows, which are part of Msheireb Properties and Vodafone Qatar’s sustainability practices.

TIG/m, Manufacturing firm of Msheireb Downtown Doha Tram, Receives Prominent Awards Global Light Rail Awards 2020

California tram company, TIG/m, LLC, the innovative engineering and manufacturing firm of Msheireb Downtown Doha tram, won the “Manufacturer of the Year”, “Environmental and Sustainability Initiative”, and “Highly Commended in the Category of Customer Initiative” at the Global Light Rail Awards 2020.

Since December 30, 2019, MDD Tram has transported 100,000 passengers within the city, taking visitors around the central hubs from Msheireb Museums station to Al Kahraba Street, Sikkat Al wadi back to the Heritage Quarter.

At the Global Light Rail Awards (GLRA), now in its 14th year, and well-known as the industry’s Oscars, the judging panel evaluated submissions in 16 categories. TIG/m President Brad Read accepted the awards on behalf of the company, noting that “this was one of the toughest years yet to choose the winners. It is fantastic to see such expertise as we all look to bring down costs, improve safety and sustainability, and deliver the best possible passenger experience.”

Over 950 entrees were made to the GLRA awards this year and the winning results generate a great deal of interest from the international transit community. The event organized by Mainspring and supported by industry publication Tramways & Urban Transit. In the “Manufacturer of the Year” category TIG/m prevailed over two other shortlisted contenders; industry heavyweights, CAF and Stadler Rail.

TIG/m, LLC is an innovative engineering and manufacturing firm supplying self-powered trams, tramway infrastructure, and tram system services to projects in various parts of the world including North America, South America, and Asia. Their mission to reduce the environmental impacts and costs of urban rail transportation has resulted in technologically groundbreaking street railways systems that operate independent of any need for distributed power infrastructure such as overhead wires.

TIG/m was founded in 2005 by the merger of an engineering firm with a manufacturing company and dedicated all of its efforts to developing a new kind of urban electric rail car that could operate without overhead wire, carrying all of the power for a full day of passenger service aboard each car. “Doha Smart Cities Summit” Stresses on the Role and Importance of Smart Cities in Tackling Pandemic Challenges

Msheireb Properties, the leading sustainable real estate development company in Qatar, organised the first-of-its-kind virtual summit in the region – “Doha Smart Cities Summit.” The event took place on November 24, hosting Msheireb Properties representatives, partners, global smart cities leaders, innovators, and experts locally, regionally and internationally.

The speakers discussed the vital role of smart cities for current and future generations and its high capabilities to tackle different challenges during pandemic times, and its role in supporting sustainability and water and energy efficiency.

Engineer Ali Al-Kuwari, Msheireb Properties Acting CEO, revealed that Msheireb Properties is conducting tests for autonomous vehicles at Msheireb Downtown Doha during the summit. The new autonomous vehicles will be offering their services once the tests are completed.

Al-Kuawri added in his speech: “Since its inception, Msheireb Properties has taken the responsibility to build a fully sustainable smart city, which is Msheireb Downtown Doha, one of the smartest and most sustainable cities in the world. Smart cities are no longer a matter of choice but rather a global trend adopted by countries and corporates to cope with new societal demands, whether by individuals,companies, or governmental entities. Smart cities have proven their high capabilities to meet individual and companies’ needs better than conventional cities during the Corona pandemic, in the fields of remote learning, work from home, delivery servicesor unmanned equipment. ”

“Msheireb Properties is adopting an “autonomous vehicle” concept, which can be used in many matters, especially in various delivery services, without the need for a driver. Further tests are being conducted on this vehicle in our city Msheireb Downtown Doha, and once they are completed, the vehicle will serve residents and tenants,” he stated.

Reem Mohammed Al-Mansoori, Assistant Undersecretary for Digital Society Development, Ministry of Transport and Communications said: “Qatar is working to accomplish sustainable development as per the pillars of 2030 Qatar National vision and change the economy from a natural based economy to a knowledge-based society, with Qatar being positioned at the forefront of digital innovations.

 

“The ministry launched TASMU smart Qatar Program as the digital response to the national vision. TASMU harnesses advanced technology and innovation to deliver smart solutions and applications across priority sectors. For example, this year, to help reduce the strain on our health care facilities, during COVID-19, we accelerated implementing one of our existing smart solutions in the healthcare sector. We launched the service in collaboration with the Ministry of Public health virtual consultation services. We also launched EHTERAZ mobile application; the smart solution helped the country identify and manage disease transmission chains”.

 

H.E. Hassan Al-Thawadi, Secretary-General, Chairman, Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 LLC, said, “Qatar succeeded through hard work and proper planning in overcoming the obstacles related to the international tournament. We work to ensure the provision of smart experience for visitors to Qatar 2022 from the moment they board a plane, arriving at Hamad International airport, using 5G network, commute through Doha Metro, booking their stay in Msheireb or any other destination, and moving to and from the stadiums and other locations.”

Reiterating the importance of sustainability in preserving the environment and resources, Al Thawadi stated that all stadiums are sustainable to serve all member of society.

Smart cities were able to quickly and efficiently respond to fighting the virus, through processing algorithms and artificial intelligence applications that helped authorities set plans in place to trace suspect COVID-19 Cases.”

The summit included representatives from global leading smart cities, such as Amsterdam and Singapore. Leonie van den Beuken, Program Director at Amsterdam Smart City, and Tan Puay Hong, Principle Engineer at Land Transport Authority of Singapore, shared the experience of the two cities with the audience.

The summit included a series of panel discussions about a range of specialist areas. The first panel discussed cybersecurity in smart cities and the importance of implementing digital systems services. The second panel focused on mobility and autonomous vehicles and the presentation of a new transportation business model. The third session was held under the title of “Innovation and Sustainability From Lifestyle Shift to Climate Change.” The summit ended with a special closing panel session on a pandemic-ready smart city model, outlining smart cities’ readiness and preparedness in the stages of lockdown.

Msheireb Downtown Doha hosts Multi-media Art Exhibition ‘Outbreak’ – Organized by Doha Film Institute’s Ajyal Film Festival from 19th November to 10th December

Msheireb Downtown Doha, the flagship project of Msheireb Properties and one of the smartest and most sustainable city district in the world, will host the multi-media art exhibition ‘Outbreak’, organised by the Doha Film Institute’s (DFI) 8th Ajyal Film Festival.

The multi-media exhibit is part of the Ajyal Film Festival’s events and will take place in Sikkat Wadi Msheireb in Msheireb Downtown Doha. It is part of the collaboration between the annual film festival and Msheireb Properties to promote local arts and support the creative community. The exhibition will feature selected inspiring artworks from 24 local talent that reflect the new reality of today’s world, as it faces a period of instability and uncertainty and pays tribute to the brave frontline workers and modern-day heroes who sacrifice their lives daily for our safety.

Msheireb Downtown Doha, the smart and most sustainable city in Qatar, launches the first edition of Al Sikka ‘Gourmet Street’ event and “In Downtown” exhibition during October.

Al Sikka ‘Gourmet Street’ event will be hosted at Msherieb Downtown annually with a different concept every year. This year, the event will feature a unique new ice cream concept presented for the first time in Qatar, where families can enjoy a wide variety of flavours offered by the city’s prestigious retail brands. The event will also host the Music Affairs Center’s to play magical music pieces creating a beautiful ambiance. Al Sikka ‘Gourmet Street’ starts today October 21 and opens from 4 pm to 11 pm.

In addition, Msheireb Downtown Doha launched yesterday the  “In Downtown” exhibition in collaboration with Alhosh Gallery and the support of Seashore Qatar. The exhibition is open to the public for free and features 17 artists from Qatar who display a collection of their portraits and artworks. The exhibition takes place at Sikkat Wadi Msheireb and is open from 4 pm to 9 pm.

Msheireb Properties Officially Launches the “Gulf Sustainable Urbanism” Book in a Special Virtual Event

Msheireb Properties and Qatar Foundation have officially launched the ‘Gulf Sustainable Urbanism’ Book, researched and written by Harvard University, during a special event held yesterday at Mshiereb Museums at Msheireb Downtown Doha and simultaneous virtual online platform that broadcasted the event live.

The special ceremony was attended by Msheireb Properties and Qatar Foundation officials, including Eng. Ali Al Kuwari, Acting CEO, Msheireb Properties, H.E. Sheikh Hassan Bin Mohammed Bin Ali Al Thani, Qatar Foundation Cultural Advisor, DR. Hafez Ali Msheireb Museums Director, Eng. Issa Al Mohannadi, the Chairman of Qatar Green Building Council, and Harvard University professors, along with VIP guests and delegates from the region.

The “Gulf Sustainable Urbanism” Book is an in-depth study sponsored and supported by Msheireb Properties and Qatar Foundation, researched and written by The School of Design at Harvard University. The research is an outcome of a decade of field research to establish a holistic framework documenting, analyzing, and deciphering the principles of urban sustainability of 10 selected case study cities in eight countries in the Gulf region.

In his opening remarks, Eng. Ali Al Kuwari, Acting CEO, Msheireb Properties, said: “Sustainable buildings are a significant factor in protecting our environment, preserving our natural resources, and reducing water and electricity consumption in the long term. Our region needs such study and analysis as a solid base for the present and the future construction trends. The ‘Gulf Sustainable Urbanism’ Book will be excellent sustainability and urban planning reference for academic institutions, universities, and libraries.  It is a solid foundation to understand the construction and social trends back then and how it impacted the socio-economical aspects. “

“This ground-breaking research knowledge holds the potential to be transformed into useful guidance for making holistic, sustainable decisions for the Gulf region’s future urbanism. Sustainability is a core pillar and value to our company.  It clearly replicates our flagship project Msheireb Downtown Doha, the most sustainable city district in the world”, he added.

In his speaking notes, H.E. Sheikh Hassan Bin Mohammed Bin Ali Al Thani, Qatar Foundation Cultural Advisor, reiterated Qatar Foundation’s role in supporting and conducting the research. H.E. stated that the GSU Book meets all the significant needs in documenting a scientific reference in the Gulf region for researchers, experts, and students. He stressed on the Book conclusions’ importance that creates a specific identity and forms for the Gulf architecture.

Eng. Issa Al Mohannadi, Chairman of Qatar Green Building Council and former CEO of Msheireb Properties, discussed how the research focused on the Past period of the cities on the Gulf’s coastal line scientifically and professionally. He reiterated that this Book should be continuously updated and completed to include the Present and Future phases to make it legacy for the coming generations.

Through a live video conference call, Prof. Spiro Pollalis from the University of Harvard talked about the excellent collaboration between Msheireb Properties, Qatar Foundation, and Harvard University to issue this critical Book. At the same time, his colleague Prof. Nader Ardalan stressed on the collaboration with Gulf researchers to obtain the required data, analysis, and findings listed in the Book.

The electronic version of the Book was presented by Prof. Angela Kouveli from Harvard University, who explored the GSU Book main components and scope of research, as well as the best way to explore this electronic version of the Book.

The Gulf Sustainable Urbanism book is available in an electronic version and a special print edition of 900 pages, size 11″ x17″ in two volumes with nearly 1,000 illustrations/analytical diagrams in high-quality graphics.

The GSU book results from more than nine years of research; it started in 2011, with the first phase completed in 2020. The study covers three periods: past, present, and the future. Harvard University has completed the first phase, “The Past,” and released the first part of the Book, which covered ten cities in eight countries bordering the Gulf’s coastal zone: Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Iran, and Iraq. The study framework was based upon three research topics: (1) Environment/Public Health, (2) Social/Cultural/Economic, and (3) Urban Form/Architecture. These research topics are studied at four ‘scales’: region, city, neighborhood, and dwelling unit.

Following the official launch, a special panel discussion was moderated by prof. John Spengler from Harvard University gathered Ibrahim Jaidah, Group CEO & Chief Architect Arab Engineering Bureau (AEB), Dr. Rogaia Abusharaf, Professor of Anthropology at Georgetown University in Qatar, Dr. Andreas Georgoulias, Harvard University, and Reza Pourvaziry, First Global Advocate of UN-Habitat.

The launch event will be followed by online panel discussions on October 14 and 21 (with two sessions each day) to discuss different topics related to ‘the historic environment, culture, and economy of the Gulf region,’ ‘the development of urbanism, and public health of the Gulf region,’ ‘the traditional neighborhoods and architecture of the Gulf region,’ and a special session titled ‘The study of the past inform future sustainable urbanism in the Gulf.’

Msheireb Properties to launch the “Gulf Sustainable Urbanism” Book

Msheireb Properties and Qatar Foundationare are set to launch the ‘Gulf Sustainable Urbanism’ Book, researched and written by Harvard University, during a simultaneous in-person and virtual event to be held on 7 October.

Msheireb Properties and Qatar Foundation collaborated with Harvard University to undertake a multi-year research study to establish a holistic framework documenting, analyzing and deciphering the principles of urban sustainability of selected case study cities in the region. The launch of the book will bring together experts and professors from Qatar and the wider region, in addition to professors from Harvard University and guests. A unique blended in-person and virtual event will be hosted by Msheireb Properties and held simultaneaously at Msheireb Museums and on a dedicated on-line virtual platform.
